The Viagra of vitamins

Viagra is not the only answer for men with mild erectile dysfunction. Vitamin B3 has been found to improve erectile function in men with high cholesterol.

Unlike drugs for erectile dysfunction that take a few hours to kick in and that function for only brief time span, Vitamin B3, otherwise known as niacin, can be taken once a day.

In a study by Chi-Fai Ng of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, 80 men with high cholesterol that were suffering from mild erectile dysfunction, took the vitamin and showed improvement in maintaining an erection. This was compared to another 80 men who were taking a placebo.

The men started with a dose of 500mg of niacin daily to make sure they had no adverse side effects, and then increased to 1000 mg and later, to 1500 mg.

“Niacin is a very old drug and its safety is quite well documented. It is just a vitamin, therefore very simple to use,” said the researcher.

In patients with atherosclerosis or hardening of the arteries, niacin is known to improve both cholesterol and lipid levels.

Heart disease, stroke, atherosclerosis and ED are all caused by inflammation of the blood vessels. It is when this inflammation occurs in blood leading to the penis that ED results.

Men taking niacin not only have improved erectile function. The vitamin helps reduce lipid levels in their blood which helps to reduce their chances of developing heart disease.

There are still questions around the reaction patients have to the high dosage of Vitamin B3, so more study is required before it can be prescribed.
